HRPA members respond to party platforms in 2014 Ontario Election

Human Resources Professionals Association looks at party positions surrounding jobs/economy, education and pensions

TORONTO, June 11, 2014 /CNW/ - For tomorrow's Ontario election, the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) has created a platform guide to help inform Ontario HR professionals on how the Liberals, PCs and NDP stand on issues of importance to the profession and Ontario workplaces, including accreditation of immigrants, post-secondary education, unemployment, apprenticeship training and job creation.

The guide examines individual party positions on the following platforms:

• The province needs to simplify the accreditation process for immigrants to Ontario and issue its own, real-time Labour Market Opinions and enable employers to fill their positions more quickly
• Ontario needs to address issues of youth unemployment and structural unemployment
• Ontario needs to create jobs in growing industries
• The province needs to increase funding of colleges and polytechnic schools to avoid a critical skills shortage in the near future. Further, based on labour market projections, the province should provide specific, targeted support to those programs and disciplines that will be in demand in the future
• Ontario needs to change apprenticeship ratios in order to increase the number of apprentices working in the province
• Over half of HRPA members are not in favour of a separate provincial pension plan in addition to CPP
