Canada Research Centre Playing Pivotal Role in Huawei's Global 5G R&D Efforts
OTTAWA, Nov. 13, 2013 /CNW/ - Huawei, a leading global information and communication technology (ICT) solutions provider, today is hosting its first 5G@CANADA Roundtable discussion in Ottawa. The one day event will provide insights from the wireless pioneers in Canada, Europe and the U.S on how innovation will be a key driver to making 5G a reality.
Huawei's approach to 5G innovations has been open and collaborative, working extensively within the global ICT ecosystem, including industry partners, consortiums, universities and leading innovation platforms around the world.
"Huawei has put a tremendous R&D effort in 5G research and innovation," said Dr. Wen Tong, Huawei Fellow, based in Ottawa. "Today's event is an opportunity to bring together some of the brightest minds in Canada and other regions to discuss both the challenges and opportunities presented by 5G. It is through this spirit of collaboration that 5G success will be achieved."
The Roundtable discussion will touch on several different 5G related topics including long term vision and requirements, key technology drivers, innovation and societal benefits. Huawei began investing in 5G in 2009, and recently announced plans to invest an additional US$600M for research and innovation into 5G technologies by 2018. The investment will cover a range of key enabling technologies. Huawei predicts that the first 5G networks will be ready for commercial deployment starting in 2020 and will deliver peak data rates of over 10Gbps, 100 times faster than today's 4G networks.
In Canada, Huawei is collaborating with a number of Canadian Universities on 5G related research projects. By the end of 2013, Huawei will have contributed more than $2m to research conducted by Canadian Universities.
Further information on the Roundtable session will available online at www.huaweiinnovates.ca. The proceedings can also be followed on Twitter using the hashtag #5GCanada
