Hundreds of new doctors to train in BC

VANCOUVER, June 26, 2014 /CNW/ - Professional Association of Residents of BC (PAR-BC) is pleased to welcome over 350 new doctors to join residency programs across the province next month.

A resident is a physician training in a medical specialty prior to independent practice. There are 67 different residency programs, each specializing in a particular field of medicine, which take anywhere from two to seven years to complete. Resident physicians are both learners and teachers; they gain valuable experience and knowledge from both senior physicians and their patients, and in return share that knowledge with medical students.

We are excited for these new physicians to be joining the nearly one thousand residents already training in the province of British Columbia and providing vital care to their communities. Residents work in hospitals, clinics and other healthcare settings across the province. Many will train or complete rotations in rural and underserviced areas, and may choose to remain in these locations after completing their training, thereby increasing medical access for those in the community.

PAR-BC will host their annual New Member Orientation event on June 27^th at UBC Robson Square. Drs. Dave Hepburn and Rob Sealey, co-hosts of the popular radio program "WiseQuacks," will deliver the keynote address. Presentations will also be given by PAR-BC stakeholders and partner associations, including Canadian Medical Association, Doctors of BC, Physician Health Program, and Employee Family Assistance Program.

PAR-BC supports residents in becoming well-informed, prepared and professional physicians by encouraging excellence in the teaching environment, fostering collegiality, and improving resident work-life satisfaction within the communities they serve.
