City Councillor joins local group of kids for a worthy cause
VANCOUVER, Aug. 15, 2012 /CNW/ - More than 150 students from Vancouver climbed the Grouse Grind on Wednesday, August 15. The event was kicked off by Vancouver City Councillor George Affleck, who also trekked up the mountain with the group.
The event launched World Vision's "Just 1 Child" campaign in Vancouver that runs August 15-October 15. "The focus of the Just 1 Child campaign is to help Vancouver residents recognize that sponsoring just one child is all it takes to make a difference. There are almost 90,000 children overseas who are currently sponsored by Vancouver residents," said Alicia Pereira of World Vision.
Many of those who participated in the hike were from the World Vision Club at the University of British Columbia. These students helped mobilize others to participate in this challenge to raise awareness for the challenges children living in developing countries face every day to access basic needs like food, water and education.
"We realize how important it is to find sponsors for the children in the communities World Vision is active in. Sponsoring a child makes a world of difference for them. Please join us in supporting the Just 1 Child campaign!" said Johnny Wong, one of the students who helped organize the hike.
Through this campaign, World Vision hopes to find sponsors for 2,500 children in the Vancouver area. "What an inspiration it is to hike up the Grind with such a positive group of kids," said Councillor Affleck. "It is this kind of spirit and energy that World Vision wants all of Vancouver to see as we kick off the 'Just 1 Child' campaign. To show that if we give a little we can achieve so much."
