HUNTSVILLE, ON, Feb. 12, 2019 /CNW/ - Investing in public transit infrastructure that supports efficient, affordable and sustainable transit services helps Canadians and their families get to work, school and essential services on time and back home safely at the end of a long day.
The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Jeff Yurek, Ontario Minister of Transportation and Huntsville's Mayor, Scott Aitchison, today announced $102,000 in funding for a project to improve public transit safety in Huntsville.
Local residents will benefit from safer and more accessible sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and public transit stops around the Canada Summit Centre and Huntsville High School.
The Government of Canada is providing up to $38,043 through the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund for this project while the Corporation of the Town of Huntsville is providing the remainder of the funding.
This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Ontario for the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund.

- Through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, the Government of Canada is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada's rural and northern communities.
- $28.7 billion of this funding is supporting public transit projects, including $5 billion available for investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank.
- This year Ontario is giving $364 million in gas tax funding to 107 municipalities that provide public transit to 144 communities, representing over 92 per cent of Ontario's total population. This includes $124,632 to the Town of Huntsville.
