Huron-Perth teacher receives award for excellence

TORONTO, Sept. 25, 2013 /CNW/ - Kerri Lyn Grainger, a teacher for three years at St. Columban Catholic School in Dublin, received the OTIP Award for teaching excellence in the Beginning Teacher category yesterday at a ceremony in Toronto.

In those three years, Kerri Lyn has become the recognized teacher in the Huron-Perth District Catholic School Board for her use of 21st technology in the classroom. She recognizes the importance of incorporating technology into student leaning. Kerri Lyn's success with her students is reflected in one parent's observation that Kerri Lyn took her shy, insecure daughter and helped her to be all she could be. Kerri Lyn's belief in her students encourages them to believe in themselves. Kerri Lyn has earned the respect of colleagues and parents alike. "She is a great listener who is sensitive about how the other person might feel in a given situation," states one colleague.

The Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP) and the Ontario Teachers' Federation co-sponsor the OTIP Teaching Awards for excellence in teaching in the publicly funded school system. Three awards are presented: secondary school teacher, elementary school teacher and beginning teacher. Anyone can nominate a teacher in Ontario's publicly funded schools, including public, Catholic, and francophone school boards.

Winning teachers are hosted at a fall awards ceremony in Toronto where they are presented with a personal award of $1,000 and a Certificate of Recognition. Their schools are recognized as well with a $1,000 prize and a Certificate of Recognition.
