Hurricane Igor Forces the Cancellation of Wishmaker Walk for Wishes in
Clarenville and Hodge's Cove
ST. JOHN'S, Sept. 29 /CNW/ - Edie Newton, Newfoundland Chapter Director for The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, announced today that the Wishmaker Walk for Wishes, originally scheduled for Saturday October 16 in Clarenville and in Hodge's Cove, have been cancelled due to the damage from Hurricane Igor and the ongoing cleanup efforts. "We are very grateful to everyone who has supported these walks, however we recognize that the attention and focus of residents from the Clarenville and surrounding areas have turned to the massive clean-up efforts before them," remarked Newton. "Our volunteer sub-chapter team in Clarenville suggested that this is not the time to hold such an event in this community, and I agreed with them completely."
Clarenville is currently the hub for the relief efforts in the area.
Wishmaker Walk for Wishes is a national fundraising and awareness walk in support of The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada. Over 100 walks are scheduled to take place in communities across Canada this fall, in an effort to raise funds to grant the most heartfelt wish of children living with a life threatening illness. All other walks in Newfoundland remain scheduled to proceed as planned.
Local residents who are still interested in supporting Children's Wish can join the Wishmaker Walk for Wishes Virtual Walk. Details can be found at www.ChildrensWish.ca.
Donors and registered walkers with any questions or concerns are asked to contact the Children's Wish Newfoundland office at 1-800-267-4437.
The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada
Each year, thousands of Canadian children between the ages of 3 and 17 are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Since 1984, The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada has worked tirelessly to grant exceptional wishes to 16,000 children and their families.
This year, the Foundation expects to grant 1,000 new wishes and is proud to have never refused a wish to an eligible child, and with the help of volunteers and generous donors, is able to grant nearly three wishes every day. Each wish is an individual adventure, carefully structured to meet the needs of a particular child and family. The Foundation is a grassroots charity with chapters in every province and territory. The Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter was started in 1986 and has granted over 552 wishes to date.
