TORONTO, Jan. 18, 2021 /CNW/ - "My husband had a dream about some lottery numbers 20 years ago," said Ontario's newest multi-millionaire, Deng Pravatoudom of Toronto. Playing those numbers on her LOTTO MAX ticket ultimately led Deng to win the $60 million jackpot from the Tuesday, December 1, 2020 draw.
The 57-year-old married mother of two adult children and two grandchildren was beyond excited and slightly nervous as she collected her incredible windfall from the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto. Deng also took part in OLG's first ever virtual Winner's Celebration. Due to the province-wide lockdown, OLG could not hold a traditional in-person Winner's Celebration with family, friends and the media in attendance, so a virtual celebration was the next best option to mark this life-changing moment for Deng.
As an immigrant who came to Canada with her 14 siblings from Laos in 1980, winning a $60 million LOTTO MAX jackpot is beyond Deng's wildest dreams. "My family was sponsored by a local church and because we had nothing, I am thankful for the great support they provided us over the years," said Deng. "My husband and I have worked long hours as general labourers for over 40 years, trying to save what we could for our family. Due to the pandemic I was laid off last spring, so this money will certainly help make our lives much easier."
Deng has been a regular lottery player, playing the same numbers for the last 20 years because the numbers came to her husband in a dream, one night. It was that set of numbers that won her a Free Play that won the $60 million jackpot. "I left my temple after prayers, went to a nearby mall for some errands and to check my LOTTO MAX ticket. I won a Free Play ticket and added ENCORE. I couldn't believe a few days later that free ticket would be worth $60 million!"
Deng says her husband was the one who broke the exciting news to her. "I went to the bank to pay some bills and my husband went to check the tickets. When we got into the car, he told me we won the $60 million jackpot. He was serious, not joking, so I knew he was telling the truth. I started to cry. I have always prayed for a blessing that my family would be taken care of!"
When she told her children the great news, they were overwhelmed and relived for their parents. "They said, 'Mom and Dad you have worked so hard for 40 years and made many sacrifices, so you deserve this happiness!'"
Deng and her husband plan to move out of their apartment and buy and new house with the winnings, pay off some bills, help immediate and extended family and when it is safe to do so, travel the globe. "Except for when I came to Canada from Laos, I have never really travelled so I want to see Europe, Texas, Hawaii… I am excited to see the world," she exclaimed.
The winning ticket was purchased at Gateway Newstands on Yonge St. in North York.
LOTTO MAX players in Ontario have won over $5.8 billion since 2009, including 78 jackpot wins and 617 MAXMILLIONS prizes, right across the province. LOTTO MAX is $5 per play and draws take place on Tuesdays and Fridays.
