Hydrate for Their Health: Time for Pet Hydration Education Before the Hot Weather Hits
TORONTO, June 1, 2017 /CNW/ - Leading into the Summer of 2017, PetSafe® Brand is educating Canadians on the importance of Pet Hydration and aiming to instill best practices in pet owners to ensure their furry companions are consuming enough water and staying cool and comfortable during the hot and sunny seasons. In other words, PetSafe® Brand is helping individuals to recognize the signs of dehydration in our pets and make people question what our pets are trying to tell us – are they plotting a heist, or simply thirsty?
In a previous study conducted by PetSafe® Brand, it was revealed that 66 per cent of Canadians were unaware that lethargy or unusual lack of energy indicates dehydration in their pets.
The following percentages of respondents were aware of these common signs of dehydration:
- Sunken eyes – 32 per cent
- Decreased skin elasticity – 29 per cent
- Loss of appetite – 27 per cent
- Depression – 17 per cent
Alarmingly, eight per cent of those polled did not recognize these signs of dehydration in pets.
Whether active or calm, pets need plenty of water to stay hydrated. Cats require 300ml of water daily and dogs between 600ml and 2,500ml of water depending on their size, as pet water requirements are approximately 70ml per kilogram body weight.
On top of identifying the signs of dehydration and ensuring your pet is consuming its proper daily intake of water, here are other tips to keeping your pet hydrated:
- Monitor the weather and exercise pets during the coolest parts of the day
- Maintain a fresh water supply
- Know your pet's safety limits and the signs of dehydration
To keep your pet hydrated this Spring and Summer, PetSafe® Brand offers several products to help Canadians keep their pets from feeling parched:
