OTTAWA, June 25, 2012 /CNW/ - Hydro Ottawa is proud to recognize Quickie Convenience Stores with the Companies for Conservation award for introducing innovative electricity saving solutions.
Quickie implemented a new technology called Freeaire, which takes advantage of cool outside air for refrigeration, and cut its electricity costs for walk-in refrigerators by 80%. The project was so successful in the first months that Quickie plans to extend the project to other locations in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.
"Quickie is a conservation leader. The company sought out innovative solutions and cut its energy use significantly," said Roger Marsh, Hydro Ottawa's Chief Energy Management Officer.
The Ottawa-based retailer also invested in lighting retrofits, such as exterior LED lighting under gas station canopies. These energy-efficient upgrades saved the stores on average 50% of electricity costs.
"Our customers expect that we will do our part to look after the environment and we take that responsibility seriously," said Chris Wilcox, Vice-president and General Manager at Quickie Convenience Stores.
In all, Quickie Convenience Stores received $7,300 in incentives for these upgrades through the saveONenergy Retrofit Program, which is administered locally by Hydro Ottawa. This province-wide initiative provides partial funding to commercial customers who complete energy efficiency retrofit projects.
Hydro Ottawa's Companies for Conservation award recognizes local companies and organizations for their innovative conservation projects. Quickie Convenience Stores joins a growing list of business leaders who have also been recognized for their green achievements. Past recipients include: LCBO, the Ottawa Hospital and Bayshore Shopping Centre.
