Icron and EqcoLogic Announce ExtremeUSB(R) over Coax technology for Extending
USB connectivity over Coaxial cabling
USB over Coax equalization technology yields flexible system for placing remote USB devices using standard inexpensive coaxial cabling
BURNABY, BC, March 30 /CNW/ - Icron Technologies (TSX Venture: IT), leading providers of ExtremeUSB(R) USB extension solutions, and EqcoLogic, an analog semiconductor company specialized in high-performance communications circuits, announced technology providing remote high-speed USB 2.0 device connectivity over standard Coaxial cabling (USB over Coax). The USB over Coax technology is available for OEMs looking to connect remote USB devices to their security, hospitality, and industrial solutions, utilizing any type of new or existing coaxial cabling.
Combining Icron's ExtremeUSB(R) technology with EqcoLogic's EQCO875SC and EQCO850SC coaxial cable transceivers produces a 480 Mbps USB 2.0 communications link over Coaxial cables at distances of up to 180 meters. The combined USB over Coax solution is bidirectional (half duplex), supports USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices, all USB transfer types, and also supports transmission of power over the cable to eliminate the need for local power at the USB device. USB over Coax is designed to work with several types of 50 Omega and 75 Omega coaxial cables including legacy cables as well as thin flexible lightweight cables.
"Icron has delivered tens of thousands of long distance USB connectivity solutions in the market and EqcoLogic is pleased to partner with them to add Coax as another important transmission medium for ExtremeUSB(R)," stated Zephra Freeman, VP Business Development at EqcoLogic.
"EqcoLogic's EQCO850SC and EQCO875SC cable transceiver products have proven to be very reliable and resilient throughout our testing efforts," said Brian Donnelly, VP of Marketing and Business Development at Icron. "Icron is looking forward to working with OEM customers requiring solutions for long distance USB connectivity over coaxial infrastructure."
Applications of the USB over Coax technology include providing remote USB ports for inexpensive USB cameras or other security devices operating over existing coaxial infrastructure in buildings. Other markets for this technology include hospitality and industrial markets where existing coaxial cabling can be used as an advanced high-speed communications network for a variety of USB peripherals placed almost anywhere in the premise.
