IDRF hosts Vigil on Parliament Hill to stand with the Rohingya
OTTAWA, Sept. 28, 2017 /CNW/ - On Thursday September 28th, 2017, IDRF (International Development and Relief Foundation) will be hosting a vigil on Parliament Hill to show their solidarity for the Rohingya people and the current atrocities that they have had to flee in Myanmar.
The Rohingya Crisis
Since August 25th, more than 400,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh, amidst allegations of mass killings and the systematic burning of Rohingya villages by Myanmar security forces. Approximately 1,000 have been killed in clashes with Rohingya fighters and government security forces, with 80% of those who are affected who being women and children. Those who have fled are forced to live in schools and community centres, and refugee camps in Bangladesh. In addition, they are now fleeing to a country that has been flooded and has left hundreds of thousands of people displaced and lacking access to basic food and clean water.
IDRF Chair, Zeib Jeeva is requesting individuals and families from across the Ottawa area to attend the vigil and to show their support. For those who cannot attend, they can donate online at www.idrf.com/rohingya.
"IDRF is deeply concerned about the challenges that refugees face that have fled Myanmar and are currently living in camps within the Cox's Bazar region of Bangladesh. We know that there is an urgent need for clean water and food for these people as more than two thirds of those affected are women and children. We are committed to continuing to provide relief aid and are looking for the community to support us to meet the ever increasing demand as this mass exodus continues."
Members of the Media are asked to attend.
