IESO Plans Routine Voltage Reduction Test
TORONTO, Feb. 6, 2012 /CNW/ - The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is planning a routine voltage reduction test for tomorrow, Tuesday, February 7, 2012. The IESO performs voltage reduction tests every 18 months to simulate emergency actions and measure the load reduction that occurs.
The IESO is working closely with transmitters and local distribution companies to prepare for the voltage reduction test, which will comprise two separate exercises. A three per cent reduction in voltage will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. EST, while a five per cent reduction will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST.
"Voltage reductions are an important tool to help us maintain the reliability of Ontario's power system," said Kim Warren, Vice-President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer of the IESO. "Should demand for electricity exceed available supply, a voltage reduction can lower demand quite quickly and minimize the likelihood of service interruptions."
Consumers should not notice voltage reductions as supplied voltages are still expected to be within established industry standards for electrical equipment. Consumers with questions about the test should contact their local distribution company. A list of local distribution companies is available at www.ieso.ca/findutility.
More information about voltage reductions is available on the IESO website at www.ieso.ca/voltagereduction or by contacting customer relations at 1-888-448-7777.
The IESO is responsible for managing Ontario's bulk electricity system and operating the wholesale electricity market. For more information, visit www.ieso.ca.
