Launch furthers IKEA's ambition to offer healthier and more sustainable food options that taste delicious, at an affordable price.
BURLINGTON, ON, March 12, 2019 /CNW/ - Today, IKEA Canada grows its (m)eatball range, introducing the salmon ball to restaurants from coast to coast. Joining its predecessors – the Swedish meatball and plant-based veggie ball – the salmon ball is a natural next step in making IKEA Restaurants a destination for more sustainably sourced food at an affordable price.
Made from ASC-certified salmon with the addition of MSC-certified cod, IKEA salmon balls are both sustainably-sourced and responsibly-produced. By optimizing a process that takes the smaller sections of salmon that cannot be used as fillets, but are just as tasty and high quality, the IKEA salmon ball makes the most of the raw material and cuts down on food waste within production. Seasoned with seaweed and lemongrass, IKEA's salmon balls capture the fresh taste of the Nordic sea in one tasty ball. IKEA salmon balls will be accompanied with seasonal side dishes such as mashed potatoes and tomato spinach ragout, all for an everyday low price of $6.99.
"At IKEA, we want to inspire and enable Canadians to live a healthy and sustainable life, within the limits of the planet" said Danielle Beauchesne, IKEA Canada Food Manager. "With the IKEA salmon ball, we are able to offer a delicious new plate inspired by our Swedish roots, with a carbon footprint that is approximately seven times lower than the traditional meatball."
Driven by the IKEA vision to create a better everyday life for the many people, the addition of the salmon ball to the (m)eatball range means IKEA can continue to meet the food and taste preferences of all Canadians – vegetarians, flexitarians, seafood lovers, and classic meatball fans.
With a long tradition in Swedish and Scandinavian kitchens, the salmon ball is a natural addition to the IKEA Food range. Today, IKEA stores offer various responsibly sourced salmon products, including salmon fillets, cured salmon, and cold smoked as well as hot smoked salmon. In addition to the IKEA Restaurant, salmon balls will be available for takeaway purchase in the Swedish Food Market later this year.
In 2015, IKEA introduced veggie balls – a healthier and more sustainable option to join the company's iconic Swedish meatballs. Most recently, IKEA Canada launched the veggie hot dog as a new plant-based alternative to Bistro locations nationwide.
