IKO Alerts Homeowners to the Roofing Risks of Ice Dams
Latest video uploaded to IKO's YouTube Roofing Channel urges homeowners to check for possible problems
KANKAKEE, IL, May 20, 2014 /CNW/ - IKO - a North American pioneer and global leader in the roofing materials business recently created and posted a brand-new video to the company's proprietary channel on YouTube, the world's largest video-sharing site.
Marketing Director, Carol Perkins, urges every homeowner living in an area affected by this winter's exceptionally frigid temperatures and snowfall to be aware of how these conditions may have caused roof damage and leaks.
"This year, winter came to many parts of the country where ice, snow and extreme temperatures are rarely experienced. Even homeowners in northern climates and traditional snow belt areas often don't understand what an ice dam is or how it's formed. Our new video uses simple graphics to clearly illustrate the problem."
The video is hosted and narrated by John DeRosa, IKO's Manager of Sales and Contractor Development. He starts by saying that icicles along a home's eaves can be a warning sign that ice dams are being created.
He explains what ice dams are, the various ways they're caused and details exactly how they can lead to expensive water damage inside the home. He suggests homeowners ask their roofing contractor about using a waterproofing membrane on the vulnerable areas if they're having their roof reshingled.
There are two ways to get rid of ice dams. The better way is to call a professional but, if a homeowner wishes to take the do-it-yourself approach, Mr. DeRosa shares some very important tips especially in regard to safety.
Ms Perkins says, "We created this video because we're concerned many homeowners simply don't realize how much damage an ice dam can cause to home and property. Now that winter's finally over, it's the perfect time to schedule a roof inspection. A qualified contractor knows exactly what to look for and how to correct the problem before it worsens."
She encourages homeowners to watch this latest video to learn more about ice dams and their potentially devastating effects. Then she suggests they visit the IKO website at www.iko.com or download the company's mobile app to find a certified IKO ShieldPRO plus+ Contractor in their area.
