EDMONTON, March 28, 2018 /CNW/ - A private company contracted to engage in tunnelling for the City of Edmonton and EPCOR has stopped work due to it's inability to move through hard clay.
Shanghai Tunnelling Engineering was contracted by EPCOR to build storm water mitigation tunnels under 105th in downtown Edmonton. Work has come to a halt because they don't have the machinery to get through clay.
The President of the union representing city outside workers says this problem would not have happened if EPCOR had used city workers instead of contractors.
"Edmonton drainage tunnelling crews are world class," said Mike Scott, President of CUPE Local 30. "Their expertise has been shared around the globe as many communities are dealing with getting a handle on their flood mitigation. If EPCOR had decided to keep this in house, Edmonton would not be in the predicament of having to dig this machine out of the ground where it is stuck."
"It's another reminder that it's always better to use local, in-house services."
