Information Bulletin - Governors Promenade closed for the winter due to work
on Dufferin Terrace
QUÉBEC CITY, Nov. 19 /CNW Telbec/ - Parks Canada has announced that the Governors Promenade will be completely closed from November 19, 2010, until spring 2011. Major repairs under way at Dufferin Terrace had already closed the terrace entrance. The entrance on the Plains of Abraham will now also be closed during the winter months.
The stairs leading to rue Saint-Denis, which runs alongside the Citadel, remain the best alternative for travel between the Plains of Abraham and Rue des Carrières, which abuts Dufferin Terrace.
The Governors Promenade, 655 meters long and with 308 steps, stretches between Dufferin Terrace and the Plains of Abraham. Construction of the pedestrian walkway began in 1958, as Québec City celebrated the 350th anniversary of its founding, and was completed in 1959. Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker presided at its inauguration on September 9, 1960. In 2006 Parks Canada carried out a restoration of the promenade to maintain its structural integrity and improve its street furniture.
As part of its role and mission, Parks Canada is proud to help preserve the rich heritage of the Old Québec historic district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
