Inquest into the death of Alwy Al-Nadhir announced

TORONTO , Oct. 9 /CNW/ - Dr. James Edwards , Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, today announced that an inquest will be held into the death of Alwy Al-Nadhir.

Mr. Al-Nadhir, 18, died on October 31, 2007 , at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto after being shot by Toronto Police Service. Under the Coroners Act, an inquest is mandatory when a person dies while in police custody.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Al-Nadhir's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last approximately two weeks.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, December 7, 2009 , at the Toronto Coroners Courts, 15 Grosvenor Street. Dr. David Evans will preside as inquest coroner and Ms. Rebecca Edward will be counsel to the coroner.
