Inspiring Impact: Samsung Canada launches 2018 Solve for Tomorrow Challenge
National education challenge returns, bringing Canadian students together to solve real-world community challenges through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 1, 2018 /CNW/ - Continuing its commitment to Canadian classrooms, Samsung Electronics Canada Inc. today announced the official launch of the 2018 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge. Now in its third year, the national education initiative strives to empower Canadian students to discover a deeper passion for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-based learning by applying STEM to real-world challenges facing their communities. Following the first phase of this year's challenge, Samsung will award 50 Regional Finalist schools with Samsung technology kits, with four of the 50 schools moving on to phase two of the challenge to win one of four grand prize technology grants from Samsung valued at $20,000 each.
"Whether a wearable bracelet-sensory system that can translate sounds into vibrations for the hearing impaired, or a prototype water system that harnesses rain and snow to support and water a community's rooftop garden, we continue to experience how technology can inspire Canadian students. The 2018 Solve for Tomorrow Challenge is joined by returning ambassador Natalie Panek-- an explorer, Forbes 30 Under 30 nominee, and Canadian rocket scientist currently working on the ExoMars rover project. Also returning is Let's Talk Science, a charitable youth development organization which creates and delivers free STEM learning programs and services that support educators and strengthen student learning outcomes. New partner Ontario Science Centre brings its expertise in innovative STEM-based education to Solve for Tomorrow by providing hands-on opportunities and events in its art-meets-science Inventorium space.
"This program inspires young people to push the boundaries of discovery and to solve challenging problems using technology," said Natalie Panek, Solve for Tomorrow Ambassador. "I am really excited to see what students and schools imagine and materialize in 2018!"
Teachers of Canadian classrooms from Grades 6 to 12 can now enter the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge at Samsung.com/solvefortomorrow until February 28, 2018. All eligible entries will be scored based on the criteria outlined in the Official Rules available at Samsung.com/solvefortomorrow/rules-reg. Following the entry deadline, 50 Regional Finalists will be announced on or around March 26, 2018 and will receive a Samsung Solve for Tomorrow technology prize package consisting of one of each: a Samsung Galaxy S8, GearVR, Galaxy Tab A and Gear360 to help the 50 Regional Finalists produce a short video submission of their STEM project. The resulting 50 video submissions will go on to be judged by a panel of judges who will select four Regional Winners on or around June 4, 2018, with each Regional Winner receiving $20,000 in Samsung technology for their school.
The four (4) regions are as follows:
- BC and Northern Canada: British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut
- Prairies: Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba
- Central Canada: Ontario and Quebec
- Atlantic Canada: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador
