Never Leave Your Wingman
Dionne and Graham Warner's Story of Hope by Deana J. Driver
TORONTO, May 22, 2012 /CNW/ - Dionne Warner is seven-time cancer survivor with a larger than life personality who lives each day with joy, laughter and hope. Her perpetually positive attitude has shaped her story as well as inspired hundreds of patients in their fight against cancer. Never Leave Your Wingman is her unforgettable story of courage and a lesson in love.
Born and raised in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Dionne had recently moved to Saskatchewan to join her fiance Graham in 2000. A few months later a routine medical exam revealed she had liver cancer. This would be her third diagnosis with the disease and knowing what challenges lay ahead Dionne told Graham he did not have to marry her; she would return to her home in Ontario. An experienced pilot, he quickly replied, "You never leave your wingman." Since then, they have faced cancer together five times in 11 years. After being 'clear' for nearly seven years, Dionne was in told December, 2009 that her cancer had returned. This time, it was Stage Four cancer of her liver, lungs and bones. Fun-loving Dionne and her now husband Graham decided this time they would sing and dance their way through 25 months of chemotherapy by selecting a different theme for each of her upcoming 78 treatments. They entertained fellow patients and hospital staff by channeling disco, the Wild West, the roaring 20s, the Olympic Games and other amusing themes. Dionne's goal was to bring smiles and laughter to the times when they all needed it most. In January of 2012, Dionne was told her cancer was in remission.
