Introduction of Local 10-digit Dialing and a New Area Code in Newfoundland and Labrador Deferred
Recent numbering forecast indicates that area code 709 will not reach capacity this year
ST. JOHN'S, Feb. 27, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - On February 14, 2018, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) issued a decision recommending the deferral of the introduction of 10-digit dialing and new area code 879 in Newfoundland and Labrador. Based on the most recent numbering forecast, there is no requirement to add a new area code at this time.
As announced in May 2017, the new area code was scheduled to be introduced in November 2018. Each communications provider in Canada submits regular forecasts of their requirements for numbering resources to the Canadian Numbering Administrator. Various factors such as population and economic growth, plans for new services by carriers, and changes in market share have impacts on the actual and projected needs for telephone numbers. Based on the recent results provided by carriers operating in Newfoundland and Labrador, there is currently no need to introduce an additional area code in 2018. The Canadian Numbering Administrator will monitor any forecast changes and will determine an appropriate revised implementation date.
"The postponement of the introduction of 10-digit dialing and a new area code means there is no immediate need for customers to prepare equipment to accommodate 10-digit dialing and a new area code. However, communications companies in Newfoundland and Labrador are prepared and can support local 10-digit dialing in the region for those who have started to reprogram their equipment," said Glen Brown, Director of the Canadian Numbering Administrator.
