Governments of Canada and Nunavut sign a Bilateral Agreement on Sport Development and Participation
IQALUIT, Jan. 21, 2014 /CNW/ - On behalf of Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister for the Arctic Council, today joined Tom Sammurtok, Minister of Community and Government Services for the Government of Nunavut, to announce contributions from the Government of Canada and Government of Nunavut for sport development and participation in Nunavut.
The two-year bilateral agreement with the Government of Nunavut was recently approved for 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. The federal investment is $503,450 ($251,725 per year) with a matching contribution from Nunavut, for a total of $1,006,900.
This agreement is a follow-up to the one-year renewed Sport Development and Participation Bilateral Agreement with Nunavut in 2012-2013 which involved a federal investment of $250,000 and a matching contribution from Nunavut, for a total of $500,000.
Quick Facts
The Sport Development and Participation Bilateral Agreement aims to advance the objective "Introduction to Sport"—one of the five goals of the renewed Canadian Sport Policy (2012-2022)—as well as three of the eight 2012 Federal-Provincial and Territorial (F-P/T) Priorities for Collaborative Action endorsed by F-P/T governments in 2012. These three priorities are:
- Support introduction to sport programming with a focus on under-represented populations;
- Work with Aboriginal communities to identify priorities and undertake initiatives for Aboriginal sport development; and
- Support Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L).
