SUDBURY, ON, Aug. 12, 2014 /CNW/ - Jeff Watson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport today announced an investment of $169,975 for the purchase of a sand spreader and truck at the Greater Sudbury Airport.
This equipment will ensure timely and effective sand spreading operations, which increases friction on runway and taxiway surfaces for the management of snow, slush and ice on runways and taxiways. The equipment will ultimately support safe airport operation for passengers, employees, medical evacuations, and fire fighting operations during winter months at the airport.
Funding is provided through Transport Canada's Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP).

- To date, through ACAP, the Greater Sudbury Airport has received over $10.7 million in funding for 17 safety projects, including today's announcement.
- Previous projects included the replacement of a fire truck; the rehabilitation of Runways 04-22 and 12-30 with the replacement of selected apron panels; the rehabilitation of the taxiways and Subdrains; and the installation of a wildlife management fence.
- Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $632 million for 781 projects at 174 airports across the country.
