Investment in Developmental Services Will Help Stabilize the Sector, Eliminate Waitlists

TORONTO, April 11, 2014 /CNW/ - Congratulations to the Wynne government and Minister Ted McMeekin for an unprecedented investment in the developmental services sector and families and individuals with a developmental disability. 

"This is great news for individuals with a developmental disability, their families and our staff. This morning's announcement tells us that the government has heard the system has been in desperate need of support for some time now," says Brad Saunders, Regional Executive Director, "We are very pleased that the government has developed a 3 year plan to eliminate waitlists and support the thousands of people waiting for service, including those in urgent need of residential supports.  This plan will help begin to stabilize the sector for future generations of people with a developmental disability and greatly reduce the stress many families face every day." 

Today's announcement will address the 16,000 people currently waiting for direct support over the next four years while providing support to those families and individuals in urgent need, or facing a life transition. Further investment in frontline staff and agencies will help to stabilize the sector and support innovation in housing and employment. "Our staff are well trained and very committed to the individuals and families they support," says Saunders, "They play a critical role in helping individuals with a developmental disability realize their goals and be a valuable part of their community."

"People with a developmental disability deserve every opportunity to live full lives in their community.
