EDMONTON, June 27, 2012 /CNW/ - Arts, culture, and official-language organizations will help create jobs and growth throughout Alberta, thanks to investments from the Government of Canada. Today, the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, announced support for 69 projects. Minister Moore made the announcement at the Art Gallery of Alberta in the presence of representatives of Edmonton's arts and culture community.
Funding will support a wide range of arts, culture, and official-language organizations in Alberta that will generate jobs and strengthen the local economy. Organizations receiving support include the Arts on the Ave Edmonton Society, the Edmonton Folk Festival, the Citadel Theatre, and the Association canadienne-française de l'Alberta.
"The Harper Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in Alberta's economic future," said Minister Moore. "By supporting these important projects, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy, create jobs, and support our arts, culture, and heritage."
"We are grateful for this financial support," said Julian Mayne, Executive Director, Fringe Theatre Adventures. "This ongoing, reliable financial commitment translates into the annual support of hundreds of Canadian artists involved in the creation of new Canadian theatre, through their work at the Edmonton Fringe Festival and in our co-presentations of theatre year round. At the core of our mandate is the support and continued creation of a healthy community and associated communication and growth; this support from our federal government correspondingly supports that vision."
The Harper Government has provided total funding of $4,509,763 under six programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Aboriginal Peoples' Program, the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, the Development of Official-Language Communities Program, and the Enhancement of Official Languages Program. For more information about the projects, see the attached backgrounder.
