Invitation - THE ROCKETS FROM THE ORONOS PROJECT AWAIT YOU AT THE
POLYTECHNIQUE OPEN HOUSE!
Meet the rocket designers, take off with Poly Poppins, witness SAE Baja race-car stunts, take part in an extreme microwave session and get carried away by a Technical Folly!

MONTREAL, Nov. 12 /CNW Telbec/ - On Sunday, November 14, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the general public and media representatives are invited to Polytechnique Montréal to undergo amazing experiences, have stimulating encounters and discover the exciting world of engineering as part of the school's famous Open House.

The rockets from the ORONOS project: unique in Canada!

Fifteen future engineers from Polytechnique with a passion for aerospace and studies in seven engineering specialties have joined to design and build experimental rockets. Forming the only project of its type in Canada, the team is preparing to represent the country at various international competitions. Headed for the moon? While the eight-foot-plus prototypes may be hard to tell apart from Tintin's famous rocket, the aim here is to develop leading-edge knowledge in the aerospace field.

On Sunday, November 14, the public can talk with the team members and admire two prototypes, including the Everest rocket, which achieves acceleration of 225 m/s2 at takeoff and then flies at an altitude of 3,300 feet (1 km).

The Oronos project is emblematic of Polytechnique's leadership in aerospace engineering. In 2009, the institution became the first in Québec to offer a bachelor's degree program in this field. Polytechnique enjoys the advantage of numerous professor-researchers who are experts in the field, especially in the IDEA Research Chair, established in April. More than 400 Polytechnique graduates are currently working at Bombardier Aerospace and at Pratt & Whitney Canada.

In addition…

- Witness one of three demonstrations of the SAE Baja, a single-seat all- terrain prototype vehicle that can survive the worst racing conditions, created entirely by the school's engineering students. - Take off with Poly Poppins! With umbrella in hand, discover the virtual city created by Polytechnique students, who won the 12th Virtual Fantasy international competition after 30 consecutive hours of programming and 3D modelling. - Take part in an extreme microwave session! Generating plasmas and electric arcs, blowing glass and burning CD-ROMs are just some examples of what can be done with a conventional microwave oven. - Discover the Photocello, the world's first fibre optic musical instrument! - Put your engineering to the test and get carried away by a little Technical Folly. - Discover 12 bachelor's degree programs, including biomedical engineering and aerospace engineering, exclusive to Polytechnique. - Learn more about the 70 education programs offered at the graduate level. - Visit the research laboratories where technologies of tomorrow are being invented. - Find out about the career outlook in engineering: a placement rate above 96% and an open door to the world.

The November 14 activities will also be an opportunity to learn more about the programs offered at the Université de Montréal and HEC Montréal, which are holding open houses for future students on the same day.

Checklist

WHAT Polytechnique Montréal Open House WHEN Sunday, November 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. WHERE École Polytechnique de Montréal Claudette-MacKay-Lassonde Pavilion (enter by 2900 Boul.
