Philippe Halsman. Astonish Me!
The North American premiere of the retrospective of the work of American photographer Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) mounted by the Musée de l'Elysée from the Philippe Halsman Archive highlights for the first time the artist's overall productive career. Halsman is regarded as one of the 20th century's most creative photographers and captured celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Alfred Hitchcock, Albert Einstein and Salvador Dalí. He collaborated with the most prestigious magazines, including Life, for which he produced 101 covers. He constantly expanded the boundaries of his medium, in particular by inventing jumpology, a unique approach to the portrait.
The Fabulous Destiny of the Paintings of the Abbés Desjardins
In 1817, 120 paintings produced for Paris churches in the 17th and 18th centuries by renowned artists and confiscated during the French Revolution arrived in Canada. Assembled by Father Philippe-Jean-Louis Desjardins, they were sent to his brother Louis-Joseph, then the chaplain of the Augustinians at the general hospital in Québec City, who redistributed them in then rapidly growing parishes and communities. This amazing treasure-trove spurred the rapid development of Canadian painting but also the establishment of the first art collections in Québec. The exhibition comprises French paintings and Québec copies of lost French masterpieces and highlights the practice of Québec artists. Some of the works will cross the Atlantic yet again in the fall of 2017 and will be exhibited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, a remarkable partner in this striking museum initiative.
