iseemedia receives industry critical United States patent for interactive
imaging for cellular phones

TORONTO , Oct. 6 /CNW/ - iseemedia Inc. (TSX-V: IEE), a leading provider of rich content adaptation and delivery solutions for mobile applications today announced it has received a U.S. patent for interactive imaging for cellular phones. With increasing use of digital images to convey lots of information on cell phone displays, the patent grant effectively positions iseemedia as a licensing landmark in the cellular phone industry and a burgeoning number of mobile application developers that use images instead of menu-driven text user interfaces.

First filed October 5, 2004 and granted May 5, 2009 Patent No. US 7,529,552 B2 claims the following:

A method for interacting with imagery on a cellular phone, including rendering an image on a display for a cellular phone, detecting that a user has selected an active area of the display using an input device for the cellular phone, and automatically activating a function of the cellular phone corresponding to the active area of the display. A system and a computer readable storage medium are also described and claimed.

Many cell phones are operated with menu-driven text selections today. Such an interface is cumbersome, and often involves many selections, each involving pressing a key or tapping a light pen. Aside from aesthetics, much more can be conveyed with images than with text on the small cell phone displays. As popularized by the likes of Apple's iPhone, there's a growing demand for an interactive imaging application that enables cell phone users to access information they need, simply, quickly, with an intuitive interface.

Digital images are being used on cell phones in a growing variety of applications today. Using the present invention for example, a cell phone may run software or hardware that enables a user to interactively view virtual tours of various sites, and jump from one tour to another by means of "hot spots". Hot spots are active areas within a virtual tour that the user can activate in order to jump to a virtual tour specific to the active area. For example, the user can jump from a city map to virtual tours of sites of interest by activating hot spots for the sites that are located in the city map. These hot spots can also be used to automatically activate functions of the cell phone, such as a dial function.
