iTaxiworkers Eager for Today's Passage of Toronto Taxi Reforms
TORONTO, June 11, 2014 /CNW/ - Thousands of Toronto taxi drivers are eagerly awaiting today's final approval of much needed reforms to the city's taxi industry.
"It's been a long wait and we are very happy to see the dawn of a new era in Toronto's taxi industry," said Sajid Mughal, President of the iTaxiworkers Association.
The iTaxiworkers have fought for years for industry reforms to improve the lives and working conditions of drivers, particularly shift drivers who work the hardest and earn the least.
City council voted overwhelmingly in favour of reforms in February and will give final approval to the bylaw changes today. Implementation of the reforms will begin July 1.
"The owners and garages have fought against these reforms but they're on the wrong side of history. The status quo is unacceptable and the reforms will finally start us down the road to fairness in the taxi industry, especially for shift drivers," said Mughal.
"The iTaxiworkers Association celebrates this day and appreciates Toronto city council's vision for the future of our taxi industry."
