iTaxiworkers Hail Passage of Historic Industry Reforms

TORONTO, June 13, 2014 /CNW/ - The iTaxiworkers Association is hailing today's vote by Toronto city council to implement historic reforms to the taxi industry.

"We're so happy to hear this news!" said iTaxiworkers Association President Sajid Mughal.

"These reforms bring long-awaited changes that are greatly needed in an unjust and unfair industry for the majority of taxi drivers," Mughal said.

"I know so many taxi drivers who will be relieved and happy that the reforms are finally going to become reality."

It has been 15 years since the City of Toronto made any changes to the taxi industry. The new reforms are needed to improve an industry that regularly exploits frontline workers – the taxi drivers.

Implementing a single taxi licence, the Toronto Taxicab Licence, is a huge, positive step, as it helps to equalize the industry. Other changes, such as moving towards a 100% wheelchair accessible taxi fleet, will prepare Toronto for the Pan-Am and Para Pan-Am Games in 2015 and bring the city up-to-date with other major Canadian and North American cities.

"It's been such a long time since the industry has been reformed and this is a very good moment for all taxi drivers," said Mughal. "Thanks to all the councillors who voted yes to these changes."

The iTaxiworkers Association fought for years for industry reforms to improve the lives and working conditions of taxi workers, particularly shift drivers who work the hardest and earn the least.

Implementation of the reforms will begin July 1.
