It's all about slip, slap, slop and teddy bear TLC at Assiniboine Park on Sunday
WINNIPEG, May 24, 2013 /CNW/ - Mr. Bear, Mrs. Bear and Little Bear, it's time for the annual checkup and that includes preparing for the sunny summer days ahead. Dermatologists and volunteers from around Winnipeg will be at the 27th Annual Teddy Bears' Picnic on Sunday, May 26th in the Sun Awareness tent to teach parents and children about the importance of sun protection as part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
"We want people to have a great time doing their favourite summer activities because being active year round has direct benefits to our overall health and well-being," says Dr. Marni Wiseman, Regional Director of the CDA's Sun Awareness Program. "However, all that time spent out in the sun can increase a person's risk of sunburn and skin cancer which is why it's so important to be diligent about sun protection."
Along with hats, sunglasses, clothing and seeking shade, sunscreens play a major role in preventing skin cancer and reducing the photo-aging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The CDA recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which protects against both UVA and UVB rays, with an SPF of 30 or more and reapplying regularly as needed. It's also important to limit sun exposure during the peak hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the sun's rays are strongest.
People who need help choosing a sunscreen should look for bottles or packaging bearing the Canadian Dermatology Association logo. These products have been reviewed by CDA member dermatologists as part of the CDA's Sun Protection Program and have met all the approval criteria through independent laboratory testing. Picnic-goers who may have forgotten their sunscreen are encouraged to stop by the sun awareness tent and pick some up and slop it on!
The Teddy Bears' Picnic takes place Sunday, May 26th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Assiniboine Park and the sun awareness tent will be located next to Dr. Goodbear's clinic and teddy checkup stations. Proceeds from the Teddy Bears' Picnic go toward the Winnipeg Children's Hospital to continue to help them fund the medical treatments and world-class medical research in pediatrics.
