TORONTO, Nov. 9, 2015 /CNW/ - The best of show among Canadian beef breed champions was judged at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF) on Sunday, November 8. Sponsored by Masterfeeds, the top female and top bull were chosen from the Grand Champion animals of the six breeds exhibited at the Fair. The owners of the winning animals each take home a prize of $2,500.
The Angus breed ruled as both the female and bull were named Supreme Champions. OSU Empress 3100 shown by Premier Livestock, Hasson Livestock, and Six Mile Angus Ranch was named Supreme Champion female for the second year in a row. PM Thunderstruck 22'13 shown by Blacklane Meadows Angus and Vos Vegas Angus was named the Supreme Champion bull.
The officials who judged each breed throughout the beef competitions at the RAWF collectively choose the ultimate winner.
OSU Empress 3100 shown by Premier Livestock, Hasson Livestock, and Six Mile Angus Ranch was named Supreme Champion female for the second year in a row. The joint owners from Milverton and Guelph, ON and Fir Mountain, SK, were thrilled with the result.
"It's pretty cool," says Corinne Gibson of Saskatchewan's Six Mile Angus Ranch. She flew to Toronto to attend The Royal for a day to watch her cow take home the big prize. "I saw Empress at The Royal last year and knew I had to own her. After I bought an interest in her, she won Supreme Champion. I am so proud that she could do it twice. "
PM Thunderstruck 22'13 shown by Blacklane Meadows Angus of Bristol, QC, and Vos Vegas Angus of Corbyville, ON, was named the Supreme Champion bull.
"We really need to thank Masterfeeds for creating this competition," says Peter Frijters of Premier Livestock who also owns Empress. "It creates a lot of excitement in the barns." He's non-committal whether Empress will return in 2016 to attempt a three-peat.
The Royal is supported in part by the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario.
