"It's On": Postal Workers Negotiating with Canada Post
OTTAWA, Oct. 13 /CNW/ - The Canadian Union of Postal Workers formally gave its notice to bargain to the Canada Post Corporation on October 4th, 2010, on behalf of its urban operations unit. Today, CUPW members are participating in a "Day of Action" designed to encourage Canada Post to take negotiations seriously with both the urban operations unit and rural and suburban mail carriers.
Activities varied from community to community, from organizing full turkey dinners to holding information sessions for the public. CUPW locals took out ads in papers and put up billboards to make the public aware of the union's call for service expansion such as more door-to-door delivery for households, as well as increased hours and innovative products such as banking and financial services at retail counters.
"Everybody needs to know it's on because this round of bargaining is about the future of our public post office," said Denis Lemelin, National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. "We are calling on the employer to expand services to the public and to fulfill its social responsibility as a Crown Corporation."
"We will convince the employer that it makes good business sense to reinvest the benefits of modernization and new technology in the workers, in the community and into public postal service."
