Toronto's annual celebration of the Emerald Isle hits the streets on Sunday, featuring more than 100 marching sections, bands and floats. In addition to the colourful floats, fancy footwork and lively music Torontonians have come to expect, the 2016 Toronto St. Patrick's Day Parade includes new additions such as Sk8 Patrick's Crew parade of long boarders, who will open the parade, and the Ginger March, an assembly of red-heads from across the GTA who will march alongside St. Patrick's float for the finale. |
Spectators are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for the Toronto Paramedics Association St. Patrick's Day Parade Food Drive in support of Daily Bread Foodbank. |
|
"As much as our parade celebrates Ireland, it celebrates the diversity that makes Toronto great. I love seeing Torontonians of all ages and backgrounds come together to enjoy Irish culture. It's a great St. Patrick's Day tradition in the city," says Alan Louthe, Chair of the St. Patrick's Parade Society, which organizes the parade. |
|
Grand Marshalls for the 2016 parade are Sid Ryan, past president of the Ontario Federation of Labour, and Pat Sheridan, LiUNA 183 executive board member. |
|
WHERE: |
The parade starts at Bloor and St. George (near old U of T Varsity Stadium), then continues east along Bloor, down Yonge and finishes on Queen at Nathan Phillips Square. |
WHEN: |
Starting at noon on Sunday, March 13. The parade is expected to take approximately 2 hours to pass any given spot along the route. |
