NIAGARA FALLS, ON, Oct. 25, 2013 /CNW/ - At an event gathering a group of Canada's leading automotive journalists, Jaguar Land Rover Canada recently presented the Automotive Journalist Association of Canada (AJAC) Automotive Journalist of the Year to Michel Crépault of L'annuel de l'automobile and Auto Passion magazine.
This coveted award was inaugurated in 1984 by past Jaguar Canada president, John Mackie to "reward excellence in automotive journalism." It is now presented by Jaguar Land Rover Canada. A variety of submissions are considered for this award including feature story, car review, general editorial opinion, personal style and mastery of the subject for all applications of media - print, television, radio and internet. Judges take into consideration the 'body of work' of the journalist, as individual entries for each journalist is grouped together for evaluation of his or her subject matter.
The panel of three judges, Geneviève Bonin, Jacques Grenier, and Robert Bragg, all with extensive journalism and literary backgrounds was impressed with Crépault's ability to make vehicle specs simple and fun to read, and his clever story that fused the concepts of giving birth, babies and vehicle specs together.
The judges also found the journalist effectively brought to life the experience of driving through humour and imagery. The panel was impressed by the overall variety of topics and the uniqueness of each article by Crépault.
The work of first runner-up in the Journalist of the Year competition, Lorraine Sommerfeld of The Globe and Mail, was cited by the judges as being "hard to miss as she brought feeling to the automobile world through the story of a young blind sports car driver and the unusual story of differences between alpha and beta drivers."
Second runner-up was awarded to Justin Pritchard of Auto123.com for being "far from typical". The judges noted that "the information provided was easy to understand and the test drives were realistic providing insight into the driving experience."
"This award was founded over 25 years ago by Jaguar and it is always a thrill to be able to honour Canada's top talents in automotive journalism" said Barbara Barrett, communications manager for Jaguar Land Rover Canada. "Our Jaguar and Land Rover brands are premium and exclusive brands. As a result, it's so appropriate that we recognize the premium journalism published by this exclusive group of Canadian automotive journalists. Congratulations to all entrants and award winners!"
