TORONTO, Oct 6, 2016 /CNW/ - Miller Thomson congratulates Toronto partner James Klotz, a distinguished international business lawyer specializing in the fields of anti-corruption and governance, on being elected Secretary-General of the International Bar Association ("IBA"). He is only the third Canadian to hold this position within the IBA in the last half century.
With members in 160 countries, the IBA is the world's leading organization of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. As the "voice of the global legal profession," the IBA influences the development of international law reform and shapes the future of the legal profession throughout the world.
"James' election to IBA Secretary-General puts him in a key leadership role with this important global organization," said Kent Davidson, Miller Thomson Chair. "A frequently consulted and active contributor to the advancement of the profession, James' reputation in the fields of anti-corruption, governance, and international business law, makes him very well suited for the position. The IBA will benefit greatly from Jim's service in this role. "
"I have tremendous respect for the work of the IBA," said Klotz. "The IBA is the global thought leader of the profession of law, seeking to preserve and enhance the rule of law worldwide, and I am honoured to have been entrusted with the responsibility that comes with this position."
Leading up to the Secretary-General position, Klotz has been an elected member of the IBA's Management Board for the past five years, and a member of its Risk Committee. He is also an Advisory Board member of the "Allard Prize for International Integrity," the bi-annual global $100,000 award. As a past President and Chairman of the Board of Transparency International Canada Inc., he was central to that organization's introduction of its Anti-Corruption Compliance Checklist, now in its third edition. James' multi-year role with the IBA Bar Issues Commission had him directly involved with the creation of the IBA International Principles on Conduct for the Legal Profession (ethics), the IBA Guide for Establishing and Maintaining Complaints and Discipline Procedures, and the IBA Anti-Corruption Guidance for Bar Associations. Klotz also served on the Independent Governance Committee of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), as one of five governance and compliance experts from 2011 – 2014. He received his ICD.D. designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors in 2008.
