OTTAWA, Feb. 15, 2013 /CNW/ - The Board of Directors of Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) is proud to announce that Janet Longmore, the founder, President and CEO of DOT, has been selected by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship as a Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2013. Longmore is the only Canadian among the 24 chosen from around the world and only the second Canadian in the history of the award. The winners were selected in recognition of their innovative approaches to solving pressing social issues and potential for global impact.
"This is a wonderful acknowledgement of Janet's leadership and a ringing endorsement of the success and impact of DOT's unique youth-led model. DOT engages local young graduates, empowers them with information technology and 21st century skills and supports them as they become leaders of change in their communities. DOT programs are bringing youth leadership to the forefront in countries around the world," explains Patrick Gossage, Board Chair.
As a Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur, Longmore joins a privileged community of 234 social entrepreneurs from 59 countries who are fully integrated into the events and initiatives of the World Economic Forum.
"This award recognizes the critical role that young people, linked with technology, can play in designing solutions that seize the social and economic opportunities that exist in their communities. There is no more critical peer review than that of the Schwab Foundation and it is wonderful to have Canadian innovation recognized in this way. The DOT model is working across cultures and in many geographies, both developed and developing, and it is with great enthusiasm that I look forward to contributing to the work of the Schwab Foundation and the World Economic Forum. This is an enormous opportunity for DOT to build new business models and partnerships with other social entrepreneurs and the powerful network of top leaders from government and industry," says Janet Longmore.
Janet Longmore has been asked to represent the 2013 awardees in a livecast session on February 15 at 12:30 EST. Please join her at http://huff.lv/X8irjO.
