TORONTO, Jan. 14, 2016 /CNW/ - Canada's premium TV streaming service CraveTV confirmed today its latest exclusive acquisition, the critically acclaimed, half-hour comedy CASUAL, from Oscar®-nominated director Jason Reitman and Zander Lehmann. Coming off a Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and a second season renewal announcement, the complete 10-episode first season has been acquired exclusively for CraveTV for launch this Spring.
CASUAL joins the growing lineup of premium television series available only to Canadian audiences on CraveTV, alongside recent titles like DEADBEAT, Season 2 of MANHATTAN, the upcoming second season of BOSCH, and the premiere of CraveTV's first Original Canadian series, the highly anticipated LETTERKENNY. This news comes on the announcement earlier today that CraveTV is now available to all Canadians with access to the Internet.
"Since we premiered back at TIFF, one of our main goals has been to bring CASUAL to Canada," said executive producer Jason Reitman. "Our goal was to make an independent film that could be watched in installments or binged all at once and we can't think of a more perfect destination than CraveTV."
"CASUAL fits squarely into our strategy to offer a growing roster of exclusive, compelling, and high-profile series to CraveTV subscribers," said Mike Cosentino, Senior Vice-President, Programming, CTV Networks and CraveTV. "It's a zeitgeist-capturing show from an amazing creative team, a proven studio in Lionsgate, and a perfect addition to our captivating line-up on CraveTV."
CASUAL follows the story of a dysfunctional family with a bachelor brother and his newly divorced sister. Together, they coach each other through the crazy world of dating (on-line and off), while living under one roof again and raising a teenager. The series stars Michaela Watkins (NEW GIRL), Tommy Dewey (THE MINDY PROJECT), Tara Lynne Barr (AQUARIUS), Nyasha Hatendi (STRIKE BACK), and Frances Conroy (SIX FEET UNDER).
Produced by Canadian Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Juno), Right of Way Films and Lionsgate Television, the series is created and written by Zander Lehmann and Reitman's production partner Helen Estabrook (Whiplash, Young Adult).
CraveTV's lineup of exclusive series continues to grow with the addition of CASUAL to an already-robust offering that includes: two seasons of the slacker comedy DEADBEAT; the just-launched second season of acclaimed drama MANHATTAN; the upcoming sophomore season of audience favourite BOSCH; and the fast-approaching debut of CraveTV Canadian original series, the big-buzz LETTERKENNY, which streams in its entirety on Super Bowl Super Sunday, February 7.
