MONTREAL, Feb. 10, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Fondation du Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) and the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Foundation today announced a $500,000 contribution from the law firm of Norton Rose Canada to the joint fundraising campaign in support of projects currently underway to modernize academic medicine in Montreal. The donation is the collective total raised by individual donations by the firm's team, including lawyers, patent agents, and their colleagues.
"Norton Rose Canada acknowledges the collective importance of these projects for our children and grandchildren and know that they will change the face of health care for generations to come," stated Jean G. Bertrand, Managing Partner of the Montreal Office. The co-presidents of the campaign, Mr. Gino Martel and Ms. Emma Saffman reiterated that Norton Rose Canada is proud to contribute to the advancement of tertiary medicine and healthcare in Quebec and that their involvement in this major fundraising campaign is a true testament to that.
Group effort: a model for everyone!
"The members of Norton Rose Canada have demonstrated their immense generosity and for that we are sincerely grateful. We need visionaries like these men and women from the business community who, through their individual donations, are contributing to the completion of important community projects such as the new CHUM," said Christian Paire, director general and CEO of the CHUM. "This donation will be devoted to health promotion, helping to provide our patients, their loved ones and all those who rely on the CHUM with a quality environment that will contribute towards the well-being for all."
"The involvement of the entire Quebec community is vital in order for a large-scale academic hospital such as the CHUM to strengthen its expertise and offer the highest quality of care," said Ékram Antoine Rabbat, president and CEO of the Fondation du CHUM. "Today, the CHUM and its Foundation have been given substantial support by the community," he said. "This contribution from the lawyers at Norton Rose Canada will make a real difference in the daily lives of CHUM health professionals as well as the lives of patients who are the focus of our efforts," added Gilles Dulude, president of the board of Directors of the Fondation du CHUM.
A commitment that deserves recognition
In recognition of the donation, the MUHC will name a family room at its new Centre for Innovative Medicine (CIM) in honour of the firm.
"Our redevelopment project is a golden opportunity to improve our patients' experience and outcome by increasing the level of meaningful interaction that our professionals have with our patients," said Normand Rinfret, interim director general and CEO of the MUHC. "The Centre for Innovative Medicine at the Glen site is a prime example of how we will engage our patients in our research and thereby in their health and well-being. It will be Canada's largest academic clinical research centre and one of the rare few that are dedicated to both pediatric and adult patients, which makes the potential of its impact even more powerful."
"This contribution from Norton Rose Canada is a wonderful example of teamwork within the business community in support of a cause that will pay dividends to their colleagues, clients and countless others in the form of world-class health care right here at home," said John A. Rae, chair of The Best Care for Life Campaign. "We are extremely grateful and hope that this will inspire others to do the same."
