Judicial Council Allows TFN Election Appeal
TSAWWASSEN, BC, Dec. 11, 2012 /CNW/ - Following a hearing with Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) Members on Saturday, November 24, the TFN Judicial Council has found that the two appeals of TFN's general election of September 5th, 2012, are upheld and that the election must be held again.
In its finding issued today, the Judicial Council states that a notice of the new election must be called by TFN's Executive Council no later than January 11, 2013. TFN's Elections Act states that the Executive Council must give at least 90 days of notice for a general election. In the interim, the Judicial Council states that the current government will continue until the election.
The Judicial Council based its decision on the evidence and information provided at the hearing.
"We thank the Judicial Council for their service in upholding TFN laws, and for making a fair and objective decision," said TFN Chief Bryce Williams. "It's now up to the TFN Executive Council to decide when the election will be held."
The TFN Judicial Council is an arm of TFN Government under TFN Legislation and was established in April of 2009. Members of the Judicial Council are chosen for their expertise and experience in the Canadian Judicial and Financial system and operate at arm's length from TFN Government.
