Justice Cronk receives honorary LLD from Law Society of Ontario
TORONTO, June 26, 2018 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Ontario presented a degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD), to The Honourable Eleanore A. Cronk, at its morning Call to the Bar ceremony on June 26, 2018 at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.
As part of its Call ceremonies each year, the Law Society awards honorary doctorates to distinguished people in recognition of outstanding achievements in the legal profession, the rule of law, and the cause of justice. Recipients serve as inspirational keynote speakers for the new lawyers attending the ceremonies.
Justice Cronk received the honorary LLD in recognition of her numerous contributions to the profession and the Bench. Called to the Bar of Ontario in 1977, a time when very few women were in the legal profession, she became a role model and one of Canada's most respected lawyers. Her keen and incisive mind, her ability to master the most complex issues, and her eloquence and professionalism, made her a formidable advocate and one of Canada's leading litigators.
Elected as a Bencher of the Law Society in 1995, she served as Chair of its Discipline Committee and was a persuasive and constructive voice in Convocation.
In 2001, she was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario where she presided over hundreds of cases until her retirement in January 2018. Her intellect, hard work, and empathy earned the respect of the legal profession, the judiciary and the public. She was renowned for her thorough preparation and rigorous analysis and for the respect she showed to every person in the courtroom.
Justice Cronk also served as Chair of the Canadian Bar Association's National Task Force on Systems of Civil Justice (1995-96) and acted as counsel on several Royal Commissions of Inquiry. She was a frequent guest lecturer at the Faculties of Law at the University of Toronto, Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of Windsor and at numerous continuing legal education programs.
She is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Society of Barristers; a Past President of The Advocates' Society; a recipient of the Louis St. Laurent Award (Canadian Bar Association – 1997); and The Advocates' Society Medal (2003). She holds an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Civil Laws, University of Windsor (2004).

Law Society Treasurer, Paul Schabas awarded the honorary LLD to Justice Cronk, who then delivered the keynote address to the 444 new lawyers at the ceremony.
Almost 1,700 new lawyers were called to the Bar at five ceremonies throughout the province in June.
