Cigarette smoking causes 45,000 deaths each year in Canada
TORONTO, Aug. 30, 2018 /CNW/ - JUUL Labs, a technology company dedicated to eliminating cigarettes, today announced the launch of JUUL in Canada. The company's mission is a simple one: impact the lives of the world's one billion adult smokers – and the five million in Canada – by creating a satisfying alternative to combustible cigarettes.
James Monsees and Adam Bowen, who met at Stanford, co-founded what is now known as JUUL Labs in 2007 to create a switching tool for adult smokers who want to move away from combustible cigarettes.
"Adam and I had been smokers for years, and we knew that smokers who wanted to switch were looking for something that didn't look or feel like a cigarette," said James Monsees, JUUL Labs co-founder and Chief Product Officer. "That's why we created JUUL – with adult smokers in mind. It's a vapour alternative."
JUUL is a closed-pod vaping system with temperature regulation designed to provide consistent nicotine delivery. According to Health Canada, "vaping is less harmful than smoking" and "switching from tobacco cigarettes to vaping products will reduce a person's exposure to many toxic and cancer-causing chemicals."
"Canada's more than five million adult smokers deserve a real alternative to combustible cigarettes," said Mike Nederhoff, Canada General Manager, JUUL Labs. "We want to help Canadian smokers on their switching journey."
With a focus on switching, JUUL pods contain five percent nicotine by weight – approximately the same levels as a pack of cigarettes. The pharmacokinetics of JUUL mimic the nicotine delivery of a cigarette, which appears to be important to adult smokers endeavoring to switch.
JUUL Labs is also categorical: JUUL is a product for adult smokers and should be kept out of the hands of minors and non-smokers.
"Combatting teenage use is as important as providing a satisfying alternative to adult smokers, and we are developing and pioneering both technology and programs focused on the prevention of underage use of our products," said Ashley Gould, Chief Administrative Officer at JUUL Labs. "All of our retail partners must abide by provincial guidelines to ask for identification when selling our products, and our e-commerce platform uses unique ID match and age verification technology to ensure minors can't access and purchase our products online."
JUUL will be available in convenience stores, vape shops, and on the Company's e-commerce site at Juul.ca in September. Starter kits, which include the JUUL device, USB Docking Station and four flavours, Virginia Tobacco, Mint, Mango, and Vanilla will sell for $64.99 CAD. Additional flavours in refill packs include Fruit and Cucumber.
