Second time home retailer has been found in violation of labelling laws
OTTAWA, Dec. 22, 2015 /CNW/ - As a result of Competition Bureau inspections, home decor retailer JYSK Canada has committed to replace labelling on textile articles and prepackaged products bearing improper or incomplete information.
Bureau inspectors found numerous products failed to meet the requirements of the Textile Labelling Act and the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act.
In May 2014, JYSK recalled two brands of down duvets at the Bureau's request after it was revealed that the duvets did not meet the minimum down percentage requirements in order to be labelled and marketed as "down" or "goose down" articles. At that time, the Bureau also identified other textile articles and prepackaged products bearing improper or incomplete information, which were corrected.
This most recent inspection found that while JYSK had taken corrective action in 2014, additional textile articles and prepackaged products not previously identified – including duvets, bathroom, bedding, decorative and kitchen products – were found to be improperly labelled and not in compliance with the acts.
As part of a formal commitment with the Bureau, JYSK Canada is currently replacing all labels in question. These steps are expected to be completed in the next few weeks and during this period JYSK Canada will be posting a correction notice at the point of sale in every store notifying consumers of this fact.
As well, JYSK Canada will be implementing a corporate compliance program and hiring an independent officer to monitor its labelling and representations to ensure that all textile articles and prepackaged products comply with the laws moving forward.
Quotes
"JYSK Canada understands that if any violations of the Textile Labelling Act and the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act occur again, the penalties will be severe. These acts are enforced to ensure that textile articles and prepackaged products bear accurate and meaningful labelling information to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions. Due to the level of prompt cooperation and commitment received from JYSK Canada, we are satisfied that the issue will be resolved once and for all."
