The Proposed Project
Alderon Iron Ore Corp.(the proponent) is proposing the Kami Iron Ore Project (the Project) that consists of constructing and operating an open-pit iron ore mine near the towns of Wabush and Labrador City in Labrador and the town of Fermont, Québec. The mine would produce up to 16 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate annually and would include waste rock disposal areas, a tailings management facility, processing and support infrastructure, and a 12-kilometre rail connection to the existing Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway. There would also be storage and load-out facilities in Sept-Îles, Quebec.
The proposed Project is subject to both the former Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Protection Act.
