Keystone XL Report Positive for Canada

State Department's report confirms pipeline will not appreciably contribute to climate change

OTTAWA, Jan. 31, 2014 /CNW/ - The Association of Consulting Engineering Companies (ACEC) is applauding today's report from the United States Department of State indicating that the Keystone XL pipeline will not have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

The Keystone XL pipeline will provide opportunities for Canada with economic benefits that are far reaching. We have one of the most qualified engineering sectors in the world and we have access to the kind of technology and expertise that is needed to develop infrastructure that meets economic and environmental objectives.

"This is a huge step in the right direction," said John Gamble, ACEC President. "For the second time the State Department has concluded - after an intensive period of study and consultation - that Keystone will not have an appreciable impact on GHG emissions in Canada or the U.S. We need responsible resource extraction that balances economic growth with environmental protection and social responsibility. It is now clear that Keystone will achieve all of these objectives. We urge the United States government to approve Keystone XL without further delay in light of this report."

"Canada is a world leader in the responsible development of natural resources, and this report proves that our economic and environmental objectives need not be mutually exclusive," continued Gamble. "We need to bring our resources to market and there is no bigger market for our exports than the United States. ACEC and its member companies applaud the State Department's work and report, and urge the U.S. government to proceed with approval of the Keystone XL pipeline as soon as possible."
