MONTREAL, June 10, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Kinky Boots, a Just for Laughs Theatricals coproduction, the Festival Juste pour Rire's New York division, was crowned Best Musical of the year winning a total of 6 prestigious awards at the annual Tony Awards ceremony yesterday at Radio City Music Hall. Presented since 1947, the Tony Awards celebrate excellence in American theatre and musical theatre.
Adam Blanshay, CEO of Just for Laughs Theatricals and Gilbert Rozon, President and Founder of Juste pour Rire, become the first Quebecers to earn such an honour.
"This is the first year we have worked on mounting a Broadway production and we walked away with the most coveted award," said Gilbert Rozon, who was on stage with his colleagues to receive the prestigious trophy. "We are obviously happy and especially proud of what we have achieved with Kinky Boots."
With its 13 nominations, Kinky Boots, inspired by the 2005 British film of the same name, earned recognition from the American theatrical milieu for several of its collaborators. Billy Porter was named best actor in a musical, while Cyndi Lauper, in her first experience on Broadway, was honoured for her compositions. Best orchestration, best choreography and best sound were also amongst the awards won by Kinky Boots.
Kinky Boots, a dazzling musical, is running at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on 45th Street in New York. It tells the story of a struggling English shoe business that finds a new market by making stiletto boots for drag queens.
