Kitchener Teacher James McCormack Re-elected Vice-President of Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario
TORONTO, Aug. 12, 2013 /CNW/ - James McCormack, a teacher with the Waterloo Region District School Board, was re-elected vice-president of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) today.
First elected as a vice-president in 2011, McCormack has served as a member of ETFO's Executive since 2009. He has been a teacher with the Waterloo Region District School Board since 1986.
McCormack told 800 delegates to the Federation's Annual Meeting in Toronto that despite the increase in prohibitive legislation by various provincial governments, it is still through collective bargaining that ETFO can ensure that working conditions are maintained and enhanced for all members.
"There are still many struggles ahead: addressing member Health and Safety issues, ever increasing class sizes in Kindergarten and Junior and Intermediate classrooms, and the respect for teacher professionalism."
Prior to becoming local president of the Waterloo Region Teacher Local, McCormack was a local vice-president, a member of various committees including the collective bargaining team, and a school steward. McCormack is a past member of the Waterloo Region Labour Council and has been a delegate to the conventions of the Ontario Federation of Labour and the Canadian Labour Congress. He presently sits on the Executive Board of the Ontario Federation of Labour as a vice-president.
McCormack is a graduate of the Universities of Waterloo and Toronto. He studied French at Laval University and Université de Grenoble. His teaching assignments have included Core French, French Immersion, intermediate science, and Kindergarten to grade 8 classrooms.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 76,000 elementary public school teachers and education professionals across the province and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
