KRP Properties becomes largest property management organization choosing green energy with Bullfrog Power in Canada
OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 21, 2018 /CNW/ - Bullfrog Power, Canada's leading green energy provider, is pleased to announce KRP Properties (KRP), a Canadian real estate corporation, is now the largest property management organization choosing green energy in Canada with Bullfrog Power. The organization is expanding on its agreement with Bullfrog Power by choosing green electricity for the common areas of all properties and green natural gas for the common areas of four properties. This decision builds on KRP's existing commitment to green energy since 2008.
KRP has reduced its electricity-related emissions footprint by more than 6,500 tonnes since 2008, equivalent to taking over 1,350 cars off the road annually or diverting more than 2,000 tonnes of waste from landfill. This number will grow through KRP's expanded commitment to renewable energy.
Bullfrog Power's producers put green electricity and green natural gas onto the respective energy systems to match the amount of conventional electricity and natural gas KRP's bullfrogpowered locations use. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power's green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities. Bullfrog's green natural gas is sourced from a unique methane-capture project—that harnesses energy-rich gas from decaying organic matter like apple cores and grass clippings—situated on one of Canada's landfill sites. Through innovative technology, the biogas is captured, cleaned up and injected onto the national natural gas pipeline.
"KRP Properties is thrilled to be Canada's largest property management company choosing green energy with Bullfrog Power," says Terry Young, Vice President Operations, KRP Properties. "By expanding our commitment to green power and adding green natural gas, we look forward to making an even bigger difference in the fight against climate change. Further, choosing renewable natural gas helps draw attention to our new on-site composting program."
KRP Properties is piloting a composting program in four of its buildings. Since launching a pilot composting program in June of 2018, KRP's tenants have displaced 200 kg of food waste from the landfill each week. While commercial composting is not common practice in Ottawa, KRP hopes to expand their program into the rest of their portfolio.
Through the purchase, KRP will also be supporting the development of community-based green energy projects as Bullfrog uses its customers' support to provide critical funding to these projects. To date, Bullfrog Power has supported 140 installations across Canada, which include wind and solar projects with schools, Indigenous Peoples and community co-ops.
"We congratulate KRP Properties for not just maintaining its long-standing commitment to the environment—but for looking for new and innovative ways to build on its environmental efforts," says Ron Seftel, CEO, Bullfrog Power. "KRP has such influence amongst businesses, tenants and individuals within the Ottawa region and beyond. It's inspiring to see the organization use its leadership role to help increase awareness of alternative sources of energy."
