MONTRÉAL, April 30, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - To celebrate the new multi-purpose public place, Espace 67, Parc Jean-Drapeau proudly announced today it is adding L'OM Grandeur nature to its 2019 summer program. This major free concert of classical music performed by the Orchestre Métropolitain and conducted by renowned Montréal maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin, will be held on Thursday, June 27 at 8.30 p.m.
The event, organized by the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau, in collaboration with the Orchestre Métropolitain, serves as a major people-gathering activity and an invitation to rediscover a completely redeveloped site that is more majestic than ever. In keeping with the people-oriented spirit of the Expo 67 world's fair, Espace 67 has been redesigned as a place for people to meet, converse and celebrate, while highlighting the insular and charming aspect of the Parc.
With the panorama of the city providing a breathtaking background, spectators will be awed by the impressive orchestra, comprised of 77 musicians. The public will be treated to a musical program that draws on the history of Sainte-Hélène and Notre-Dame islands, including a specially created work by composer Alejandra Odgers, a native of Mexico who now resides in the Montréal area. The musical composition will provide an overview of the Parc's history, which people can learn about in the memory album Two Islands, One Park, One City, from the era of the Iroquois to the French and British occupation, right up to the major events staged there over the last 60 years, including Expo 67, the Olympic Games, La Ronde, the Grand Prix du Canada, the Floralies and so much more!
In addition to the original composition by Alejandra Odgers, the Orchestre Métropolitain will perform many major works, including Maurice Ravel's Boléro and Carmen, Suite No. 2 by Georges Bizet.
"The Orchestre Métropolitain is pleased to be a part of the celebrations surrounding the inauguration of Espace 67," stated Jean R. Dupré, the president and CEO of the Orchestre Métropolitain. "It's an honour for our musicians and artistic director and principal conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin to bring music to life in this symbolic setting, which has been the host of so many outstanding events in the history of our city. This vibrant place, where people have gathered over the years, exemplifies what makes Montréal a culturally rich city that is dynamic and open to the world. Being able to perform this unique concert is a joy for the OM to contribute to this memorable time in Parc Jean-Drapeau's evolution. It is a chance to share our passion for classical music with the public at large."
