TORONTO, Aug. 20, 2018 /CNW/ - Sign up is now open for the 27th annual Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure. Canadians can now register for one of 56 runs across the country to help raise funds for breast cancer research, support programs, health education and advocacy initiatives.
On September 30, an estimated 80,000 Canadians are expected to come together in communities across the country to support breast cancer research in the largest, single-day, volunteer-led event.
"The CIBC Run for the Cure has had a tremendous impact throughout its history, raising over $430 million for the breast cancer cause," says Lynne Hudson, President and CEO, Canadian Cancer Society. "These dollars that have been raised by committed and passionate Run participants have led to life-changing research advancements and have ensured people facing breast cancer in our country have the support they need through our trusted information and programs. But with your help, we can do more. We can prevent more Canadians from being diagnosed, find more effective treatments and enhance quality of life after cancer for survivors. We encourage all Canadians to make their promise to make breast cancer beatable by donating, registering or fundraising for the CIBC Run for the Cure."
Breast cancer continues to be the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian women with 1 in 8 expected to be diagnosed in their lifetime. But thanks to donors and trailblazing events like the CIBC Run for the Cure, investments in cancer research are making a difference. Mortality rates for breast cancer are 44 per cent lower than their peak in the mid-1980s and approximately 87 per cent of people diagnosed with breast cancer are expected to live five years beyond their diagnoses.
The first CIBC Run for the Cure took place in 1992 in Toronto's High Park. A group of volunteers brought together approximately 1,500 people and raised $85,000 for the breast cancer cause. Since then, the event has grown across the country and each year unites thousands of Canadians. Last year alone, events across the country raised an incredible $17 million.
"CIBC has been a committed partner of the Run for more than two decades and it's because of their unwavering support that we have been able to make investments in the most promising breast cancer research in Canada as well as the country's leading breast cancer information and support programs to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone," adds Hudson.
Canadians can register now until August 31 to take advantage of early bird rates. Starting September 1, minimum donations increase to $45. For registration, or for more information, please visit cibcrunforthecure.com.
